Mariela A. Porras-Chaverri
Head of Laboratory
Dr. Porras-Chaverri (she/them) received her Ph.D. in Medical Physics from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
After a Postdoctoral Fellowship at the Virginia Commonwealth University, she has been a professor at the School of Physics of the University of Costa Rica since 2016.
Her academic interests also include the interdisciplinary collaboration and transdisciplinary thinking, particularly in relation to Art and Language Sciences. She is currently a student at the Master's of Linguistics program at UCR.
She is a founding member and Node Coordinator of IAVE and a member of several international professional associations, including the AAPM, MPWB, and WiN Global.
Marco A. Rodriguez-Jiron
Graduate Student
Physics graduate at the University of Costa Rica. Currently working on his Master's thesis research focusing on ultrasound imaging. His past research includes the use and development of Geant4 tools for the estimation of mean glandular dose in breast imaging. His academic interests also include the use of novel teaching methodologies in college education.

Daniel G. Elizondo-Blanco
Undergraduate Student
Physics student at the University of Costa Rica. Currently studying metrological radiation fields using Geant4. Interested in Science Education and in pursuing a Master's Degree in Medical Physics.
Lukas Wolter
Former Spring Intern (2020)
Medical Physics graduate student working on his thesis at University Hospital in Leipzing. His internship at UCR focused on developing Monte Carlo simulations in the field of Medical Physics Metrology. The focus of his thesis work lies in Monte Carlo simulations for accelerator head modelling as well as dose computation in virtual phantoms for treatment planning purposes. He is interested in radiation therapy with the prospect of possible employment in proton- and heavy ion therapy.
Annalena Kofler
Former Summer Intern (2019)
Physics graduate from the Technical University of Munich and trainee under the RISE-DAAD program. Her research stay focused on the development of tools for the study of breast CT images.
Rahel Werner
Former Summer Intern (2018)
Medical Physics graduate from the the Martin Luther University of Halle-Wittenberg and trainee under the RISE-DAAD program. Her research stay included the simulation of dose distributions in 3D breast geometries using Geant4, and the development of related software.
Fabio Escalante
Former Undergraduate Research Assistant (2017)
Physics student at the University of Costa Rica. His work included the optimization of software for the determination of glandular tissue distribution in breast imaging.
