University of Costa Rica
The University of Costa Rica is the oldest university in Costa Rica and one of the most prestigious higher-learning institutions in Latin America. It was founded in 1940, built upon the legacy of the Casa de Enseñanza de Santo Tomás (founded in 1814). It is the largest university in the country with 12 campuses across the country and an enrollment of over 40 500 students. The Main Campus, called Ciudad Universitaria Rodrigo Facio, is located in San Pedro de Montes de Oca (a suburb of San José, yet indistinguishable from the City of San José). The campus has an extension of 750 000 m2, and includes several protected forest areas, and recreational and sport facilities.
The University is an active participant in the development of Costa Rica, through the Three Pillars of the Institution: Teaching, Research and Social Outreach.
